Similar species: This moth is unlikely to be mistaken for any other British or Irish species.
Forewing: 18 to 23mm
Habitats: Rough grassland, wet flushes on hillsides, damp heathland, moorland and open acid woodland.
Habits: The moth flies from dusk and comes to light and sugar.
Foodplant: The nocturnal larva feeds on Cock's-foot, Common Bent, Sweet Vernal Grass, Creeping Soft-grass, Wood Meadow-grass, Carnation Sedge, Field Wood-rush, probably Hairy Wood-rush and other grasses. It pupates in a cocoon just below the soil surface.
On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on False Brome, Purple Moor-grass and Carex brizoides.
