Similar species: The black collar, grey forewing and wavy black basal streak which often winds around the oval, means this moth is unlikely to be mistaken for any other British or Irish species.
Forewing: 19 to 21mm
Habitats: Arid grassland and rocky mountain slopes from North Africa and the Mediterannean to northern India.
Habits: The moth visits flowers from dusk and comes to sugar and light. There are three 19th century records, plus one in West Gloucestershire in 1968 and another in Shetland in June 1997.
Foodplant: In southern Europe the larva has been recorded feeding on Wild Strawberry and Dandelion.
