Common

Similar species: Neglected Rustic Xestia castanea does not have a very pale contrasting kidney mark, but does have a smaller black (not grey) mark within it.

Forewing: 14 to 17mm

Habitats: Most grassland habitats except at high altitude. Downland, coastal sand-dunes, arable margins, woodland rides and clearings and gardens

Habits: The moth visits ragworts, Marram and other flowers. It is attracted to sugar and light.

Foodplant: The nocturnal larva feeds mainly on grasses, but also Ribwort Plantain, Dandelion, Cleavers, other bedstraws and other herbaceous plants. The full-fed larva forms a cocoon under the soil where it rests for about six weeks before pupation takes place.

On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on violets, stitchworts and sorrels.
