Habitats: Deciduous woodland, heathland, fens and marshes.

Habits:

Foodplant: The larva at first forms a slender, strongly contorted gallery mine in a birch leaf. The isolated leaf tissue is killed, resulting in a brown blotch. It pupates in a cocoon in the leaf litter.
