Similar species:
Forewing: Parthenogenetic and wingless in Britain and Ireland.
Habitats: Woodland margins.
Habits: The adults emerge early in the morning.
Foodplant: The larva feeds mainly on insects, but also decaying plants and lichens and algae growing on tree trunks and rocks. The full-fed larva overwinters and pupates in February. The pupal case is left half protruding from the larval case on emergence.
