Habitats: Marshes, fens and river-banks.
Habits: The moth does not have a second brood from the Midlands northwards.
Foodplant: The larva forms a small round mine between two side veins on the lower surface of a leaf of Alder, Italian Alder or sometimes Grey Alder. The underside has many small creases, but appears smooth. There are often several mines in one leaf. It pupates in a strong white cocoon in the mine.
