Habitats: Deciduous woodland.

Habits: The moth rests on tree trunk during the day. It comes to light.

Foodplant: The larva feeds on Hazel, birches or Sweet Chestnut. The small larva at first produces pale brown blotches on the leaves, it later makes holes. In the later instars it feeds on the upper of two leaves spun flat or sometimes in a folded leaf. It pupates in a flimsy silk cocoon in the leaf litter. It may overwinter twice. On the European mainland it is recorded as feeding on European Hop Hornbeam.
