Habitats: Woodland margins, hedgerows, scrub and heathland. In the north it inhabits moorland and mosses.
Habits: The moth is easily disturbed in the day and rests on posts and vegetation. The male flies on warm still afternoons. It flies from dusk and later comes to light.
Foodplant: The polyphagous larva feeds in the spun shoots of privets, Purging Buckthorn, Hawthorn, heaths, Heather, Bilberry, cinquefoils, brambles, Bog Myrtle, sallows and many other shrubs and herbaceous plants. It pupates in a spinning on the ground.
