49.108 Water-plantain Straw Gynnidomorpha alismana (Ragonot, 1883)

Notable B

Similar species:

Forewing: 5 to 6.5mm

Habitats: Ponds, rhynes, disused canals and other slower flowing water habitats.

Habits: The moth flies at sunset and comes to light.

Foodplant: The larva mines into the upper flower stem of Water-plantain and moves downwards, eating the pith as it goes. From October the full-fed larva overwinters in the lower part of the stem. In May it pupates in a grey cocoon after mining an exit, leaving a layer of bark to secure the entrance. There are sometimes several larvae in a stem.
