Habitats: Open woodland, moorland, heathland, downland and flowery meadows.
Habits: In Scotland it flies in abundance over the Heather in warm weather, otherwise it flies at dusk and comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds in the spun flowers or a seed-head of Ribwort Plantain, other plantains, Yarrow, Marjoram, Goldenrod, thymes, Heather and in Scotland Sitka Spruce. From October the full-fed larva overwinters in the larval spinning where it pupates in April.
