Tortricidae

49.161 Barred Marble Celypha striana ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)

Common

Similar species: The rufous colouring across the forewing varies in intensity from saturated to none, but the bar across the wing and the dark markings in the outer area should serve to identify this species.

Forewing: M 8 to 10.5mm, F 7.5 to 8mm

Habitats: Wasteground, calcareous grassland, fields, vegetated shingle, open woodland, hedgerows, verges, embankments and gardens.

Habits: The male flies in sunshine. Both sexes fly from dusk and later come to light.

Foodplant: The larva feeds at first under a flimsy web on the surface of a tap-root of Dandelion. It later bores into the root, sometimes killing it. The larva pupates just under the surface of the soil by the root or in the hollowed root.
