Habitats: Open woodland, scrub, marshes, damp meadows, wet heathland, bogs, calcareous grassland and sand-dunes.
Habits: The moth flies on sunny days and during the evening. It also flies from sunset and later comes to light.
Foodplant: The polyphagous larva feeds in spun flowers and terminal shoots of Broom, Meadowsweet, orchids, hawkweeds, Bird's-foot Trefoil, Greater Bird's-foot Trefoil, plantains, bedstraws, and scabious where it may damage the stem and cause wilting. It is less often found on brambles, Raspberry, birches and Alder. It pupates in the larval spinning or spins a flimsy cocoon among other leaves of the foodplant.
