Habitats: Open woodland, heathland and moorland.
Habits: The moth flies around the trees during the evening and later comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva at first bores the stem of a birch or Alder causing a swelling. In the last instar it lives in the turned down edge of a leaf. It pupates in a cocoon in the leaf litter.
