Local

Similar species: Gypsonoma sociana has a white face and darker markings in the outer half of the wing. Gypsonoma dealbana lacks the dark area in the apical blotch and has a longitudinal dark dash at two thirds of the wing length.

Forewing: 5.5 to 7mm

Habitats: Open woodland, parkland, hedgerows and suburban trees.

Habits: The moth rests on tree trunks and nearby fences in the day, but is easily disturbed. It flies at sunset and it occasionally comes to light.

Foodplant: The larva feeds in the shoots and leaf stalks of Black Polar, White Poplar and Balsam Poplar. It later lives and feeds in the stem, exuding frass into an erect silk tube. It pupates in a cocoon in a bark crevice or amongst leaf litter.
