Habitats: Rough grassland, marshy grassland, damp open woodland and scrub, wasteground and sea-cliffs.
Habits: It rests openly on its foodplant in the day and is easily disturbed. It flies in the evening and later comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds in the stems and roots of Musk Thistle, Marsh Thistle or Spear Thistle. It pupates in April in the upper part of the larval mine.
