49.308 Elgin Shoot Moth Rhyacionia logaea Durrant, 1911
Notable A
Similar species:
Forewing: 6.5 to 8.5mm
Habitats: Pine forest and coniferous woodland.
Habits: The moth is easily disturbed in the day and flies from mid afternoon.
Foodplant: The young larva spins a web and mines the needle sheath of Scots Pine or Lodgepole Pine, eventually boring deeper into the shoot. It later bores into the stem close to a winter bud and makes a several centimetre long tunnel in the stem. The damage caused to the buds and shoots may cause them to die and break off. It pupates in the larval feeding place or in acocoon spun in the angle at the base of a twig.
