Similar species:
Forewing: 5 to 7mm
Habitats: Open woodland, woodland margins, scrub, parkland, pond and stream margins, river-banks and coastal cliffs.
Habits: The male occasionally flies in the afternoon and both sexes fly in the evening. It occasionally comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva enters a one-year old stem of Goat Willow or Grey Willow just above a bud, eating the pith and wood. A mixture of silk and reddish frass may indicate the larvas presence. The feeding causes the twig to expand into a smooth, slender gall. The full-fed larva overwinters in a cocoon in the upper part of the larval feeding place, where it pupates in May. After emergence exuvia is sometimes left in the exit hole.
