Tortricidae

49.341 Marbled Piercer Cydia splendana (Hübner, [1799])

Common

Similar species:

Forewing: 6.5 to 10.5mm

Habitats: Woodland, hedgerows and gardens.

Habits: The moth flies from the late evening. It later comes to light.

Foodplant: The larva feeds on the kernel of acorns, Sweet Chestnuts or Walnuts, filling the hollowed out part with frass. The full-fed larva leaves the nut when it has fallen in October and spins a cocoon in the leaf litter where it overwinters (sometimes twice). It pupates in late May spun up in the leaf litter, in the earth, in a crevice in tree bark, under moss or occasionally in a spent gall.
