49.342 Beech Mast Piercer Cydia fagiglandana (Zeller, 1841)

Common

Similar species:

Forewing: 6 to 9mm

Habitats: Woodland and hedgerows with trees.

Habits: The moth flies high around the trees during the evening. It later comes to light.

Foodplant: The larva feeds in a nut of Beech, hollowing it out and filling it with frass. When the Beech mast falls in autumn, the larva leaves and spins a cocoon in the leaf litter, where it overwinters (sometimes twice). It pupates in a dense cocoon, in the leaf litter, amongst moss, under bark or under rotten wood.
