Habitats: Barns, stables, animal shelters, poorly maintained farm buildings and outhouses.
Habits: In the day the moth can be found in the darker corners of barns and outhouses. If disturbed it runs rather than flies away. It is nocturnal and occasionally comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva lives in a silk gallery for up to two years, feeding amongst cereal refuse, animal feed, seed, chaff, hay and occasionally old animal dung. It is sometimes gregarious. Pupation takes place in a strong silk cocoon with debris attached, usually a short distance away from its food source.
