Similar species: Scoparia ambigualis has paler markings along the leading edge of the forewing and has a space between the large marking at two-thirds and the outer central crossline.

Forewing: 7 to 9mm

Habitats: Ancient woodland, occasionally other woodland and gardens with Apple trees.

Habits: The moth rests on Ash and other tree trunks during the day. It flies from dusk and later comes to light and sugar.

Foodplant: The early stages have not been recorded in Britain and Ireland. On the European mainland the species has been reared from Squirrel-tail Moss Leucodon sciurodes which grows on Ash and Apple trunks.
