Similar species: Common Lutestring Ochropacha duplaris has two dark dots rather than a crescent in the forewing and lacks the dark dash on the leading edge just before the outer pale band.

Forewing: 17 to 21mm

Habitats: Mature deciduous woodland and wooded heathland.

Habits: The moth can occasionally be disturbed from vegetation during the day. It comes to light and occasionally to sugar.

Foodplant: The larva feeds at night on the leaves of birches and sometimes Alder. During the day it rests between two spun leaves. It pupates in a cocoon between spun leaves which fall to the ground in autumn.
