70.144 Green Pug Pasiphila rectangulata (Linnaeus, 1758)

Common

Similar species: Sloe Pug Pasiphila chloerata has red scales on the upper side of the first three segments of the abdomen and where the outer edge of the cross-band reaches the leading edge it is almost smooth rather than having an indentation. Bilberry Pug Pasiphila debiliata has much more subtle markings which lack the dark edges to the cross-band towards the leading edge. Also the inner side of the cross-band is roundly angled.

Forewing: 8 to 11mm

Habitats: Woodland, parkland, scrub, hedgerows, orchards and gardens.

Habits: The moth comes to light.

Foodplant: The larva feeds on the flowers of Blackthorn, cherries, Crab Apple, cultivated Apple, pears and Hawthorn. It pupates in the leaf litter or just under the soil.
