Similar species: A small dark brown moth with sparsely white scaled cross-bands at the leading edge of the forewing that disappear before reaching the hindwing. Fresh specimens are distinctive.

Habitats: Marshy grassland, damp meadows, marshes, fens, vegetated coastal sand-dunes and dune-slacks, wasteground and breckland.
Habits: The moth flies around the foodplant in sunshine. It comes sparingly to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on the ripening seeds in the flowers and seed-capsules of Field Mouse-ear and possibly other mouse-ears.
