Similar species: Golden-rod Pug Eupithecia virgaureata also has a pale crest on the thorax, with an often browner forewing, a more prominent pale outer line and bright spots in the trailing corners of the wings. In the case of worn specimens, melanic forms or if unsure of the identity check the genitalia.
Forewing: 10 to 12mm
Habitats: Conifer plantations, mixed woodland, coniferous shelter belts, parkland and gardens.
Habits: The moth can be disturbed from the lower branches of larch in the day. It comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on the needles of mature trees of European Larch. In captivity it will accept other larches. It pupates in loose soil.
