Similar species: Lesser Treble-bar Aplocera efformata is smaller (16 to 19mm) with a more sharply angled basal cross-band and blunter tips to the abdomen in both sexes. Manchester Treble-bar Carsia sororiata anglica is smaller (11 to 15mm) with a more rounded basal cross-line and a red flush in the outer wing area.
Forewing: 19 to 22mm
Habitats: Calcareous open grassland, open grassland scrub, disused quarries, field margins, woodland clearings and rides, heathland, moorland, sand-dunes, coastal land slips, sea-cliffs and gardens.
Habits: The moth is easily disturbed in the day. It flies from dusk and comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on St John's-worts. It pupates under the soil.
