Similar species: Manchester Treble Bar Carsia sororiata anglica is smaller (11 to 15mm) with a more rounded basal cross-line and a red flush in the outer wing area. Treble-bar Aplocera plagiata is larger (19 to 22mm) with a less sharply angled basal cross-band and more pointed tips to the abdomen in both sexes.
Forewing: 16 to 19mm
Habitats: Calcareous open grassland, open grassland scrub, disused quarries, field margins, woodland clearings and rides, sand-dunes, sea-cliffs and gardens.
Habits: The larva is easily disturbed in the day. It flies from dusk and comes sparingly to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on St John's-worts. It pupates under the soil.
