Similar species: If care is taken it is unlikely that this grey banded moth will be mistaken for other British or Irish species. As with close relatives the male has a lobe attached at the trailing edge of its hindwing.
Forewing: 9 to 12mm
Habitats: Damp deciduous woodland, sallow carr, scrub, marshes, fens, damp heathland, sand-dunes and dune slacks.
Habits: The moth flies from dusk and comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on sallows and sometimes White Willow. It pupates in the leaf litter.
On the European mainland it has been recorded feeding on Osier Willow, Purple Willow and Aspen.
