Similar species: Sharp-angled Peacock Macaria alternata often has a more diminished 'paw print' mark in the forewing, a narrower black rectangle on the leading edge of the forewing, a deeper dark concave on the outer edge and a more solid grey bar across the fore and hindwings.

Habitats: Deciduous woodland and birch scrub on heathland. Often on chalk.
Habits: The moth is sometimes disturbed from scrub during the day. It flies from dusk and comes sparingly to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on Silver Birch, other birches and occasionally sallows. It pupates in the leaf litter.
On the European mainland it also feeds on oaks.
