Similar species: Peacock Moth Macaria notata has a more distinct 'paw print' in the forewing, a broader rectangle on the leading edge of the forewing, a shallower dark concave on the outer edge and a more lined rather than solid bar across the fore and hindwings.
Forewing: 13 to 15mm
Habitats: Open deciduous woodland, heathland scrub and sand-dune scrub.
Habits: The moth flies from dusk and comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on sallows, willows, Blackthorn, Sea Buckthorn and Alder. It pupates in loose soil.
On the European mainland it has also been recorded on oaks, Goat Willow and Bird Cherry.
