Similar species: This moth is unlikely to be mistaken for any other British or Irish species.

Forewing: 13 to 14mm

Habitats: Deciduous woodland, parkland, scrub, hedgerows and gardens.

Habits: The moth is sometimes found on tree trunks or disturbed from the foliage of its foodplants during the day. It flies from dusk and comes to light.

Foodplant: The larva feeds on Hawthorn, Midland Hawthorn, Blackthorn and probably plum and other Rosacea. It pupates in the leaf litter or in the surface of loose soil.

On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on Goat Willow, limes, Wild Cherry and Rowan.
