Similar species: If care is taken this moth is unlikely to be mistaken for any other British or Irish species.
Forewing: 19 to 22mm
Habitats: Rough herb-rich grassland slopes. Formerly in open woodland and on sea-cliffs.
Habits: The moth flies in sunshine and is easily disturbed in the day. It flies from dusk and comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on Wild Marjoram, Common Knapweed, Common Bird's-foot Trefoil and probably other herbaceous plants. In captivity it will accept Knotgrass, Common Chickweed and docks. It pupates attached to a grass stem or blade.
On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on Field Wormwood.
