Similar species: Lobster Moth Stauropus fagi is superficially similar because of the similar size and because both have similar resting postures with the hindwings showing outside the forewings, but when put alongside each other the differences are obvious.

Forewing: 23 to 32mm

Habitats: Mature deciduous woodland.

Habits: The male comes to light, the female only rarely.

Foodplant: The larva feeds on Sessile Oak or Pedunculate Oak. It pupates deep in the soil.

On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on birches and Beech.
