Common

Similar species: Swallow Prominent Pheosia tremula has a grey-brown and less distinct wedge running at least half way from trailing corner of wing towards the wingbase. Lesser Swallow Prominent has a shorter distinct white wedge.

Forewing: 20 to 26mm

Habitats: Damp woodland, scrub, heathland, moorland, marshes, fens, amenity planting and gardens.

Habits: The moth comes to light.

Foodplant: The larva feeds on Silver Birch and Downy Birch. In captivity it will accept sallows. It pupates in a tough cocoon in the soil.
