Similar species: Orange Footman Eilema sororcula has evenly orange-coloured wings that broaden at about three-quarters of their length when compared with the orange forms of Buff Footman.

Habitats: Mature deciduous and mixed woodland, downland scrub, heathland scrub and fens.
Habits: The moth comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on lichens and green algae on the branches of oaks, Yew, birches, Hawthorn and other trees. It pupates in a cocoon amongst lichens on the bark or in a bark crevice.
