Similar species: Tunbridge Wells Gem Chrysodeixis acuta has duller, brassy rather than golden metallic areas. The underside of the males abdomen has brown hairs at the tip rather than black tufts.
Forewing: 15 to 18mm
Habitats: In southern Europe and Africa it inhabits a wide variety of habitats from arid slopes to grassy meadows, arable land and gardens.
Habits: The moth flies from dusk and nectars at Ivy and Red Valerian. It also comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on sage, Viper's Bugloss, thyme, Chrysanthemum spp., Pelargonium spp., nettles, Impatiens spp., Celery, Tobacco, Tomato and other plants. In captivity it will accept Common Nettle. It is considered a pest species in Africa and southern European countries. Although it does not survive our winters, it may have been temporarily established in Tomato greenhouses in eastern England. It pupates in a flimsy cocoon under a leaf of the foodplant.
