Similar species: This moth has a narrower wing than similar species and varies from dark to pale grey with pale-edged inner and outer central cross-lines. It is unique enough that it is unlikely to be mistaken for any other British or Irish species. There are specimens in southern Europe that have bold black or orange length-ways streaks.
Forewing: 12 to 14mm
Habitats: In mainland Europe it inhabits sunny slopes and dry open grassland with bare ground and rocky outcrops.
Habits: The moth comes to light.
Foodplant: The early stages have not been recorded in Britain. In southern Europe the larva feeds on lichens on rocks and old stone walls, including Sticta pulmomacea. It pupates in a lichen-covered cocoon attached to a rock.
