Similar species: Morris's Wainscot Photedes morrisii is larger (12 to 14mm), slighter in build and has a less angular forewing. Small Wainscot Denticucullus pygmina is of a similar size (10 to 14mm), but usually flies later in the year (occasional from late June, frequent from late July, peaks in early September). The forewing is usually darker and the streaking on the veins more prominent. If unsure check the genitalia.
Forewing: 11 to 13mm
Habitats: The drier parts of fens, marshy rides and clearings in ancient woodland.
Habits: The moth flies at dawn, as well as from dusk and late at night. It comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds inside a stem of Wood Small-reed or Purple Small-reed, changing stems as it grows. It pupates amongst leaves at the base of the foodplant.
On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on Lyme-grass.
