Similar species: The combination of the dark speckling and the black streak at the base of the forewing should separate this moth from other British and Irish species (although there is a scarce form that lacks the basal streak).

Habitats: The drier parts of reed-beds.
Habits: The moth flies from dusk when it visits honeydew and flowering grasses. It comes to sugar and light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds inside a stem and then on the leaves of Common Reed. It pupates in the leaf litter.
