Similar species: This moth is unlikely to be mistaken for any other British or Irish species.
Forewing: 16 to 20mm
Habitats: Deciduous woodland, especially along river margins or marshes.
Habits: The moth nectars at ragworts and other flowers. It is attracted to sugar and light.
Foodplant: The nocturnal larva feeds on docks, Greater Stitchwort, Common Nettle, White Dead-nettle, Red Dead-nettle, Common Sorrel, Sheep's Sorrel, Primrose, Cowslip and other herbaceous plants. Pupation takes place in a cocoon just below the soil.
On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on plantains, bedstraws and Bilberry.
