Similar species: If care is taken this moth is unlikely to be mistaken for any other British or Irish species.
Forewing: 14 to 17mm
Habitats: Young birch woodland on mountain slopes and in glens.
Habits: The moth nectars at Heather blossom, occasionally comes to sugar and is attracted to light.
Foodplant: The nocturnal larva feeds on Bilberry and Heather and in the spring the leaves of Eared Willow and birches. Pupation takes place under moss, in the leaf litter or just under the soil.
On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on Bog Bilberry.
