Similar species: Bordered Gothic Heliophobus reticulata is on average smaller (17 to 19mm) with a narrower forewing and the inner central cross-line is curved inwards rather than straight.

Habitats: Marshes, marshy grassland, river margins and damp woodland.
Habits: The moth nectars at flowers just after dark and is attracted to sugar. It comes sparingly to light.
Foodplant: The nocturnal larva is gregarious at first, feeding on Common Comfrey, willowherbs, Cleavers, Dandelion, docks, Primrose, plantains and other herbaceous plants, as well as woody plants including Blackthorn, sallows, apples and Buddleia. It hides in loose soil or leaf litter during the day. It pupates under the soil.
On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on Common Nettle, dead-nettles, Wormwood, Mugwort, figworts, Greater Plantain, sorrels, Bramble and Bird Cherry.
