Nolidae

74.001 Small Black Arches Meganola strigula ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)

Notable A

Similar species: Least Black Arches Nola confusalis has a white rather than greyish-orange crest on the thorax. The inner central cross-line lacks the outward "V" shape just before it reaches the trailing edge. The outer central cross-line is more prominent and the outer area of the wing is usually darker. This species and Small Black Arches vary in the strength of their markings, so if outside of a known site for this species great care should be taken with the identification.

Forewing: 9 to 11mm

Habitats: Mature deciduous woodland and more open areas with large stands of mature oaks.

Habits: The moth comes to sugar and light.

Foodplant: The larva feeds on Pedunculate Oak. It pupates in a boat-shaped cocoon attached to the underside of a twig of the foodplant.

On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on Beech, limes and occasionally Wild Cherry..
