Similar species: This moth is unlikely to be mistaken for any other British or Irish species, although some specimens of the smaller (8 to 9mm) Scarce Black Arches Nola aerugula may have a broad band of brown shading along the inside of the outer central-cross-line.
Forewing: 10 to 11mm
Habitats: Coastal sand-dunes, vegetated shingle, salt-marsh, coastal heathland, clearings in open woodland and calcareous grassland.
Habits: The moth is sometimes disturbed from shrubs during the day. It comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on Bramble, Dewberry, Raspberry and Wild Strawberry. It pupates in a cocoon attached to a vertical stem.
